A lively group of students enjoys their ride on the bus during National School Bus Safety Week. As they embark on another school day, they are reminded of the essential safety practices that keep them secure during their commute. This week serves as a vital opportunity to reinforce the importance of remaining seated, listening to the driver, and being aware of the bus's "danger zone." Together, these students are learning that safety on the bus is a shared commitment, ensuring everyone arrives at school ready to learn and grow.

As winter draws near, DoDEA Europe schools are placing renewed emphasis on school bus safety and preparedness through training initiatives during National School Bus Safety Week. Observed during the third full week of October, this week highlights the importance of safety measures for all students who rely on school transportation.

As they prepare to head home, these young learners are reminded of key safety protocols, including staying seated and being aware of their surroundings, ensuring a safe journey for everyone.

This year’s theme, “Be Safe; Know the Danger Zone,” serves as a reminder of the importance of staying vigilant around buses, especially as winter weather conditions become more hazardous. Force Protection Specialist Jeff Kay is urging students, parents and staff to report any suspicious activity around school buses. “Reporting is key,” Kay emphasized. “Make sure you get as many details as possible when you see something unusual and report it to the installation Military Police/Security Forces.” Tools like iWATCH are essential for reporting suspicious behavior and staying proactive about safety.

Michael Fischer, Occupational Safety & Health Officer, added, “It is still dark outside as most of our students are making their way to the bus stop in the morning. Students should be visible to drivers, and drivers need to be cautious as they approach bus stops.” He is also reminding school staff, parents, and students to take extra precautions when getting on and off buses as winter approaches. "Slippery conditions mean we need to be even more cautious when stepping on and off the bus," Fischer said. He recommends checking road conditions regularly, with resources such as Army Road Conditions to stay informed about hazardous travel areas.

Students will participate in evacuation and safety drills this week, learning to safely exit buses in emergencies by leaving belongings behind, exiting through the safest available route, and assisting peers who may need help. Parents and guardians are encouraged to review these procedures with their children to reinforce the importance of safety procedures while riding the school bus.

Good behavior on the bus is also a focus, with students reminded to follow key safety rules: no eating or drinking on the bus, keeping noise levels low, sitting forward in their seats, and keeping aisles clear of personal belongings. Additionally, students should arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes early and avoid standing or playing in the street while waiting.

National School Bus Safety Week underscores the collective responsibility of students, school administration, transportation officials, and DoDEA contracted staff in maintaining a safe environment for school transportation. By staying mindful and prepared, DoDEA Europe schools aim to ensure safe travels for all students this winter.
